Preview: Friday 17 May 2019, 6-9pm
Exhibition: 18 May – 15 June 2019 (Thurs-Sat 12-6pm)
Opening on 17th May 2019, Block 336 presents Another Funny Turn, the first UK solo exhibition of work by artist-duo, Sarah Cockings & Harriet Fleuriot. In this exhibition, the artists take performative possession of their confused teenage selves, reviving dormant personal coping mechanisms to survive their thirties. Responding to both individual and collective motivations behind the consumption of gaming and horror films, their sculptural sound and video installation delves into a disorientating wilderness of dramatic rehearsal driven by catastrophic thinking.
Rocks judder, bushes smirk, shadows twist and walls breathe. Only relics remain. Using deliberate aimlessness executed with military precision, they encounter and test the terrifying and entertaining indifference of nature, lurking and idling amid overgrown ruins whose purposes have morphed. Follow them as they haunt their way along a rambling Hero’s Journey.
Sarah Cockings & Harriet Fleuriot work collaboratively across performance, video, sound and sculpture. Their first project together was short film PLASMA VISTA (2016). It was selected for Bloomberg New Contemporaries in 2017, which was hosted at Block 336 and BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art. The piece won Tenderflix in 2016, and has screened internationally including WRO Bienale, Aesthetica, Underwire, BFI Flare, Eindhoven Film Festival, ECU, London Short Film Festival and TBCTV at Somerset House. Plasma Vista is currently touring with Videoclub.
They created LENDABLE MENDABLE VENDABLE in 2018, an interactive installation where they performed game-like systems to investigate the agency of material objects and anxious, desire-driven labour. LMV took place at Art Night (London, UK) and Eindhoven Film Festival (Eindhoven, Netherlands) in 2018 and will culminate in a short film due to be completed in 2019/20. The pair will take part in Art Night 2019 with a new work Vast Forward, opening on 22nd June 2019.
Block 336 thanks the Arts Council England, The Elephant Trust, Back Lane West and Brixton Brewery for their generous support of this exhibition.
